Business flood protection
Business flood protection installed by Stormguard Floodplan.
For businesses that operate in a area prone to floods there is possible nothing more important than ensuring their premises is protected from flood water. It was estimated that in 2014 floods cost small firms alone £831 million in repairs, lost revenue and disruption to day to day operations. Business flood protection can help reduce the cost will lose in the case of floods. In order to prevent floods causing disruption to their business Yara asked us to look at protecting their premises from floods.
Yara’s situation.
Yara are based in Grimsby. Several of their premises are based close to the mouth of the River Humber, which greatly increases the chances of coastal and groundwater flooding. To ascertain the situation facing Yara we carried out a flood risk assessment of their premises and came up with a plan to ensure total business flood protection.
Installing business flood protection
After carrying out the flood risk assessment we identified a number of areas where Yara could benefit from the installation of flood protection. This included both internal and external doors, as well as around machinery which was located outside of the main building.
External Doors.
We installed flood barriers to a number of external doors. This step was taken to prevent flood water encroaching into the premises from outside in the case of a flood. These flood barriers were installed on the inside of the building to ensure that they could be removed in case of an emergency which required rapid evacuation of the premises.
This shows how light the flood barriers are – they are approved for use on fire exits as they can be removed in a number of seconds. However they also prove excellent protection from flooding, making them ideal business flood protection.
Internal Doors.
Flood Barriers were also installed on a number of internal doors in the premises. This was because our flood risk assessment found that certain areas of the premises were susceptible to groundwater flooding and the usual preventive measure of tanking was unfeasible. Flood barriers were therefore installed on internal doors to prevent flood water reaching other areas of the premises and causing even more damage.
External Machinery.
In order to protect machinery that was based outside the premises flood barriers were once again used to ensure water did not affect the machinery. This prevents the machinery needing either expensive maintenance or repairing in case of a flood.
