Essential Maintenance for your Sump Pump

Many homes across the UK rely on sump pumps from us here at Stormguard Floodplan to keep basements and crawlspaces dry. They pump away excess groundwater, preventing it from accumulating and causing flooding. However like any hardworking appliance, sump pumps need regular maintenance to function optimally. A neglected sump pump can become less effective, putting your home at risk during heavy rain.

The key to sump pump success lies in preventative maintenance. Here’s how you can ensure yours is in top shape:

Regular Testing is Key
Don’t wait until there is a downpour to discover your sump pump isn’t working. Carry out a simple test at least once every three months, and more frequently before heavy rain is forecast. To do this, you need to pour a bucket of water into the sump pit. The pump should activate automatically, expelling the water and then switching off once the water level recedes. This confirms the float mechanism (which triggers the pump) and the pump itself are functioning correctly and are therefore ready to keep your home dry.

Keep it Clean
Over time, sediment, debris, and dirt can build up in the sump pit which clogs the pump inlet and hinders its ability to remove water effectively. Aim to clean the sump pit at least once a year, or more often if you notice excessive debris. To do this turn off the pump at the mains and remove any dirt or objects that might obstruct the float mechanism or inlet screen.

Inspect and Maintain
A quick visual inspection during cleaning can reveal potential problems. Look for signs of wear and tear on the pump housing, power cord, and discharge pipe. Check the float mechanism for cracks or if it’s stuck. A faulty float switch is a common cause of pump malfunction.
