Why a Single Product Is Rarely a Complete Flood Protection Solution

Why a Single Product Is Rarely a Complete Flood Protection Solution

When people think about protecting their home from flooding, they often think about a single solution. This could be a barrier across the front door, or a sump pump in the basement. It’s an understandable approach, but it’s one that leaves most properties only partially protected. The reality is that flood water doesn’t pick one entry point and stop there. It finds every gap it can;  through airbricks, under doors, up through drains, through walls and up from the ground. A single product, however well made, can only ever address one of those vulnerabilities at a time. At Stormguard Floodplan, our aim is to ensure your property is fully protected.

Take a typical terraced house in a flood risk area. The front door might be covered by a flood barrier, but what about the airbricks on the side elevation? What about the soil pipe running beneath the kitchen? What about the ground water that rises through the floor during prolonged rainfall? Each of these is a separate problem that requires a separate flood protection solution.

This is exactly why we start every project with a thorough on-site assessment rather than leading with a product recommendation. Until we’ve walked the property and identified every vulnerability, we can’t honestly tell you what you need.

A truly complete flood protection solution typically combines several products working together. Flood barriers handle doorways and openings. Airbricks replace standard vents to prevent water creeping in through ventilation points. Sump pumps manage ground water from below. Non-return valves stop sewage backing up through drainage. Tanking seals basement walls against rising water tables. Waterproofing protects the exterior fabric of the building.

None of these products replaces another. Each one tackles a different route that flood water might take into your property.

If you’ve already had one form of flood protection installed, that’s a solid start, but it’s worth asking the question: what else could water find its way through? Many of our customers come to us after being flooded despite having some protection in place, and in most cases the answer is a gap that a single product simply wasn’t designed to cover.

A proper flood assessment will give you a clear picture of every risk your property faces and what it would take to address each one. From there, you can make an informed decision about how much protection you want in place.

Flood protection solutions work best when they work together. If you’d like to find out what a complete solution might look like for your property, contact us on 01260 289 089 or get in touch online.
